NSG’25 News Geohazards in the Spotlight at Naples Conference

The introduction of a parallel conference on Geohazards Assessment and Risk Mitigation at NSG 2025 is a timely and important initiative. Geohazards such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, floods, coastal erosion, and sinkholes pose significant risks to both communities and infrastructure. Addressing these challenges requires a multidisciplinary approach, bringing together geoscientists and engineers – a space where EAGE is well positioned to contribute.

This is an area that our Near Surface Geoscience Conference has been exploring for many years already, with EAGE members playing a key role – and in the future, possibly a larger role, as climate change accelerates and urbanization expands.

Halfway through the Sendai Framework for Disaster Reduction 2015-2030, the main international agreement targeting global disaster losses, the UNDRR reported a critical update including a scenario of increasing disaster risk reaching 560 occurrences a year by 2030. About 125 countries now have national strategies in place for disaster risk reduction, but many still lack multi-hazard early warning systems. It is therefore imperative that innovation and best practices are pushed forward for faster progress.

The choice of Italy as the host country underscores these goals, given the country’s susceptibility to a wide range of geohazards and its active engagement in developing effective mitigation and preparedness strategies. Such a setting for our meeting not only emphasizes the urgency of the topic but also provides opportunities for informative field trips showcasing local mitigation efforts and historical case studies.

As part of EAGE’s commitment to fostering synergy and technical innovation across disciplines, a key highlight of the conference will be its collaboration with EAGE’s Landslide Workshop, further enriching the technical programme with specialized expertise. The event will also benefit from the participation of the EAGE Technical Community on Geohazards, contributing to a dynamic knowledge exchange. Will you join the conversation?
