Opening Panel Discussion: The role of near-surface geophysics for a net-zero future

In the opening session of the EAGE Near Surface Geoscience Conference and Exhibition, an expert panel will delve into the role of near-surface geophysics in the transition towards a net-zero future, one of the major challenges the world is facing.

The panel will be composed of policy makers and leading experts in the fields of offshore energy/renewables, risk assessment, infrastructure and the environment. The panelists will share their vision and expertise addressing challenges and opportunities in data acquisition and processing, the need for technological developments, and resource and risk management.

As such, the debate will explore the intersection of geophysics and sustainability, uncovering its potential to transform energy systems, mitigate environmental impacts, and drive us toward a greener world. Interdisciplinary collaborations are key to gain insights into successful collaborations between geophysicists, engineers, policymakers, and other stakeholders, fostering a holistic approach to achieving a net-zero future.

Following the debate, the audience will be invited to participate.

Special Session Challenges of Nearshore Landfall Investigation

Date:

5 September 2023

Time:

14:00 - 15:20 BST 16:10 - 17:30 BST

Room:

Kilsyth

A collaborative session to highlight key challenges of investigating nearshore ground conditions and potential solutions to overcome these issues. Ground investigation at landfall sites commonly suffer a data gap between the near shore geotechnical and geophysical surveys undertaken from vessels limited by water depth and the onshore site investigation which cannot access shallow waters. In some markets providing data within this zone is critical for consenting. For many sites intertidal zones present geological complexity and the need for continuous data is crucial to inform landfall design.

Building Public Trust with Near Surface Industries: A Pathway to Rebuilding the Talent Pipeline Needed for a Green Energy Transition

Edinburgh is the perfect backdrop for a discussion of expanding our use of near surface resources to meet global demand to have sufficient and affordable clean energy in a social environment critical of extractive industries. The panel will explore the challenges and opportunities to address a broad societal reputation of an industry that is dirty and destructive and its impacts on expanding into new markets essential to the green energy transition. The discussion will focus on exploring how these challenges transcend into the current downturn in interest in the study of geology and other skills needed to meet the labor needs of the green energy transition. Just kilometers up the coast lies the birthplaces of geology (Hutton’s Siccar Point) and the modern conservation movement (Dunbar – birthplace of John Muir), setting the stage for debate. After the panel, please join us for a full-day field trip on Thursday to continue the conversation and walk in the shoes of Hutton and Muir, to be inspired to find collective solutions.
