NSG’25 News Great Minds, Groundbreaking Work: Highlights from NSG 2025

With a top-quality technical programme – enhanced this year by two new thematic tracks – and a vibrant community agenda, the NSG Conference reaffirmed its role as a key gathering for professionals working across the near-surface spectrum, from environmental applications to mineral exploration and infrastructure development.

The impact of EAGE members across this diverse field was especially visible earlier this year, when two outstanding contributors were honoured among the recipients of the EAGE Awards 2025, recognised for work that exemplifies the innovation and collaboration at the heart of the NSG community.

Dr. Myrto Papadopoulou
(Uppsala University) was awarded the prestigious Arie van Weelden Award for her innovative work in seismic reflection imaging and surface wave analysis, with applications in mineral and geothermal energy exploration, COâ‚‚ storage, and geotechnical characterization.

“This award marks a personal journey of collaborations, research, and industry partnerships,” Myrto said. “To young professionals: stay curious and fearless. Let your passion, curiosity, and collaboration guide you. Near-surface geoscience is a catalyst for building a sustainable future – and you are essential to making that future a reality.”

Professor Luigi Zanzi (Politecnico di Milano) was awarded Honorary Membership in recognition of his lifelong contributions to applied geophysics, particularly in civil engineering and geohazards. This year, he also played a key role in the NSG Conference, serving on the Local Advisory Committee and the technical committee of the new Geohazards Assessment and Risk Mitigation track, launched for the first time in Naples.

As we reflect on the success of NSG 2025, the event stands as a powerful reminder of how innovation and collaboration continue to drive near surface geoscience forward.

Looking ahead, we now invite the community to help shape the future by recognising excellence. Nominations for the 2026 EAGE Awards are open until 31 October 2025.
