Opening Session

Opening Panel Discussion Geoscience in the Public Eye: Bridging the Gap Between Science and Society for Trust, Transparency, and Impact

Date:

8 September 2025

Time:

09:00 - 10:30 CEST

Room:

Dione

This year NSG2025 will open with a timely and thought-provoking panel on the power of geoscience communication. In an era marked by rising environmental risks, public scepticism, and growing social complexity, geoscientists are increasingly called to go beyond data, to communicate clearly, ethically, and inclusively.

The NSG2025 Opening Session will focus on communication strategies in the context of geohazards, drawing cross-sector insights from the mining sector and beyond. Together with leading voices in risk communication, stakeholder engagement, and early warning systems, we’ll explore:

  • How to build community trust around geoscientific findings
  • How to address fear and misinformation in sensitive areas like the Phlegraean Fields
  • The role of culture, pedagogy, and youth engagement in long-term preparedness and resilience

Can the Critical Raw Materials Act deliver on its promise?

Join this expert-driven event exploring the Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA) from both European and an Italian case study perspective. This panel will highlight how the CRMA is reshaping geoscientific priorities, affecting exploration, and redefining the link between science and policy. Hear from key stakeholders across institutions, industry, and academia as they debate challenges, share solutions, and highlight what’s next for securing Europe’s critical raw materials future. A must-attend for anyone working at the intersection of geoscience, policy, and strategic resources.

Below the Sustainable Development Goals most aligned with this panel and its objectives:

SDG 4 – Quality Education
Empowering students through exposure to real-world science-policy issues.

SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation & Infrastructure
Advancing innovation through multi-stakeholder insights on the European Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA), bridging technical expertise and policy to build future-proof raw material strategies.

SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals
Connecting academia, industry, and policy for shared solutions.

Special Session Beyond the horizon: next breakthroughs in near-surface

Hosted by Women in Geoscience & Young Professionals EAGE Special Interest Communities

Date:

9 September 2025

Time:

14:00 - 15:20 CEST

Room:

Agave

Geoscientific developments over the past decades have been mainly driven by oil & gas exploration. Until recently, this knowledge has diversified and now been applied to a variety of applications in the near-surface domain, including engineering, environmental, archaeological, natural resource, etc., which could pave the way for the next frontier for advancements in geoscience. In this session, we would like to discuss the next breakthroughs in near-surface research, emerging key areas, and how the future of (near-)geophysics looks.
